In today’s globalized world, safe and secure shipping of products has become essential for businesses. And when it comes to packaging, corrugated packaging is key. Corrugated packaging is made of corrugated fiberboard, which consists of a fluted layer sandwiched between two flat layers. It is the most common type of packaging used for shipping and protecting products. In this blog post, we will discuss why corrugated packaging is essential for safe shipping and protecting products and how to choose the right options for your shipping needs.

Protection:

Corrugated packaging offers excellent protection for products during transportation. The fluted layer in corrugated fiberboard provides cushioning and absorbs shock during transit, preventing damage to the products inside. Additionally, corrugated packaging is sturdy and can withstand heavy loads, reducing the risk of crushing or collapsing.

Versatility:

Corrugated packaging is versatile and can be customized to meet specific packaging needs. It can be made in various sizes, shapes, and strengths, making it suitable for packaging a wide range of products, from small electronics to large furniture. Moreover, corrugated packaging can be printed with company logos, branding, and other graphics, enhancing the product’s presentation and providing additional marketing opportunities.

Eco-friendliness:

Corrugated packaging is made from renewable and recyclable materials, making it eco-friendly. The use of corrugated packaging reduces the reliance on plastic packaging, which can take hundreds of years to decompose. Additionally, corrugated packaging is easily recyclable and can be repurposed for other uses.

Cost-effectiveness:

Corrugated packaging is cost-effective compared to other packaging materials. It is lightweight and reduces transportation costs. Additionally, its durability and versatility mean it can be reused multiple times, further reducing costs and waste.

Compliance with regulations:

Corrugated packaging is compliant with various regulations governing the transportation of goods. It meets the requirements of the International Safe Transit Association (ISTA), ensuring that products are protected during transit. Additionally, corrugated packaging is compliant with the regulations of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) for packaging food products.

Choosing the Right Corrugated Packaging for Your Shipping Needs

When it comes to industrial packaging, choosing the right material can make all the difference in ensuring your products arrive safely at their destination. However, with so many options available, knowing which type of corrugated packaging is right for your business can be difficult. Here are some key features to consider when selecting corrugated packaging and how to choose the right options for your shipping needs.

Flute Profile:

The first consideration when selecting corrugated packaging is the flute profile. The flute refers to the arch-shaped layer in the corrugated board’s middle, giving it its strength and cushioning properties. Flutes are available in several different profiles, including A, B, C, E, and F.

A flute provides the thickest profile and is ideal for shipping products that need extra cushioning, as well as for stacking purposes. B flute is designed for packing canned goods and is often used on high-speed, automatic packing lines. C flute is the most commonly used profile and is suitable for packing furniture, glass, and other heavy yet fragile goods. E and F flutes are the least durable but are often used in retail packaging as they provide a surface suitable for printing.

Board Type:

Next, you will need to consider the type of board you will use in your corrugated packaging. Again, there are four options available:

  • Single-face board: This consists of one sheet of liner attached to the corrugated layer and is ideal for wrapping products for extra cushioning.
  • Single-wall board: This is the most standard option and consists of a single layer of corrugated medium sandwiched between two liner sheets. This is the type of board used for most consumer products and goods.
  • Double-wall board: To make a box more durable, add extra liners and layers of corrugated medium. Two sheets of corrugated medium and three sheets of liner create a double-wall board.
  • Triple-wall board: This is the strongest option, consisting of three layers of corrugated medium between four liner sheets. It is typically used to ship industrial parts or heavy consumer goods.

Board Grade:

Once you’ve selected the type of board, you will need to determine the appropriate board grade. The two main options are:

  • Edge Crush Test (ECT) board: This measures how much stacking pressure a box can take before collapsing. The higher the ECT value, the more your corrugated package can withstand. ECT board is best for stacking boxes on top of each other, such as in a warehouse or pallet.
  • Mullen board: This measures the box’s resistance to puncture from internal contents or external factors. Boards with a higher Mullen value can withstand more pressure before being damaged.

Shape and Size:

Finally, you will need to consider the shape and size of your corrugated packaging. Various styles are available, including regular slotted containers, full telescope designs for fragile items, and one-piece folders. Your choice will depend on the size and shape of your products and any specific requirements for printing or branding.
