Embracing Sustainable Stewardship

Our Reforestation Commitment

At Atlantic Packaging Products Ltd., sustainability isn’t just a buzzword; it’s woven into the very fabric of our identity. We hold a profound belief in the responsible stewardship of our planet, and our actions stand as a testament to this commitment. As we look to the near future, we’re thrilled to share our ambitious plan to plant over 3000 trees, a significant stride towards a greener, healthier world.

A Noble Partnership in Reforestation

We are proud to announce our partnership with Laura and Damien Pine, distinguished experts with an impressive 36 years of combined experience in overseeing tree planting initiatives. Their expertise aligns perfectly with our mission, making them invaluable allies as we embark on a bold journey to restore and reforest a two-hectare area in British Columbia which is equivalent to approximately 13 tennis courts in size.

This revitalized habitat, once home to lush forests, will be transformed into a thriving haven for wildlife and a cherished destination for outdoor enthusiasts. What was once a logged area two years ago will soon be reclaimed, and the transformation will serve as a symbol of our dedication to conservation, carbon capture, and recreational development.

A Sanctuary for Wildlife and Nature Enthusiasts

Our collaboration with the local municipality has yielded a significant commitment. In response to the passionate calls from the community, the municipality has decided to halt its logging operations in the community forests and redirect its efforts toward preservation. This newly designated area will not only provide a sanctuary for wildlife but also offer an inviting landscape for hikers and nature lovers.

Planting with Purpose

Our reforestation efforts will primarily feature coast Douglas Fir, a tree species perfectly suited to the local ecosystem. These remarkable trees can reach towering heights of 100 meters and span an impressive 2.4 meters in width. What’s more, they have a lifespan of up to 750 years, underlining their enduring impact on the environment.

The coast Douglas Fir ecosystem (CDF) is a precious and endangered treasure in Canada, found only in select regions such as south-eastern Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands, and the Sunshine Coast. In addition to coast Douglas Fir, we will introduce a variety of conifer species, including White Pine, Western Red Cedar, and Grand Fir, carefully chosen to thrive in specific areas within the reforested land.

Handcrafted Sustainability

Our commitment extends beyond numbers and statistics. We will plant all 3000 tree seedlings by hand, meticulously selecting optimal microsites to ensure the best possible growth and long-term viability. Our partners in this endeavor, Damien and Laura Pine, bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise, with their combined 36 years of experience in tree planting and supervision.

As we forge ahead on this journey, Atlantic Packaging Products Ltd. stands resolute in its dedication to environmental stewardship. Our reforestation initiative is a testament to our belief in a greener, more sustainable future for generations to come. Together, we are sowing the seeds of positive change and nurturing the planet we all call home.

Sustainability is in Our Nature

Our approach to sustainability goes beyond the environmentally friendly products we provide; it’s ingrained in our culture of continuous improvement and our commitment to market-leading innovation that drives sustainability forward. Take a look at the many ways Atlantic Packaging contributes to Sustainability.

Atlantic is synonymous with sustainability as we have built a name, reputation, and trust with our partners and customers who know and value our commitment to the environment. We build long-term relationships with our customers and partners who value our drive for sustainability and preservation. Sustainability for us is not an ad-hoc idea that is implemented from time to time. Our business is built and thrives on sustainable solutions. It is systematic, formal, and fully integrated into our activities. Our practices are eco-efficient that aim to reduce waste products as we encourage our partners to adopt a more eco-conscious thought process through our solutions.

We have partnered up with food chains, restaurants, and grocery outlets with huge packaging requirements and we aim to meet these challenges purely through sustainable initiatives and ideologies. We help reduce the carbon footprint of our clients as well. Our solutions always aim towards environmental preservation. We minimize any activity that has a negative environmental impact. Our sustainable manufacturing allows us to leave a positive impact socially, environmentally, and economically. This is what drives us forward!

Sustainable Packaging
Products

Atlantic’s 100% recycled corrugated packaging products offer customers a truly sustainable packaging option. Compared to paper packaging products made from virgin fibers, choosing to use recycled packaging not only saves trees, but also saves water, energy, and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

As part of our commitment to the environment, Atlantic’s paper mills only manufacture 100% recycled paper used to manufacture corrugated packaging products. We do not use the virgin pulp as all our raw materials are obtained by recycling discarded boxes. We follow a fully integrated protocol.

How Sustainable is Your Packaging?

The packaging choices you make have a significant impact on the environment. When you choose 100% recycled corrugated packaging products, you’re making a choice to reduce your overall environmental footprint. Choosing recycled corrugated vs Virgin paper products reduces the number of mature trees that are harvested and in turn positively affects key environmental factors like water and energy usage and diverts packaging waste from landfills.

Water

Choosing 100% recycled corrugated packaging products, compared to virgin fiber paper, saves more than 4 billion gallons of water per year. That’s enough to fill more than 6,000 Olympic size swimming pools. In addition, we look for ways to further reduce our freshwater consumption. Here are just a few of the things we do at Atlantic to reduce our water usage:

  • We have water recycling, steam capture, and condensation recovery programs at all of our paper mills
  • We recycle the water used in our pulping process to reduce our freshwater requirements
  • Wastewater from our plants is treated until it meets or exceeds all sewer bylaw requirements making sure no contaminants are discharged into sewers

Energy

We recognize that manufacturing is an energy-intensive business and we’re dedicated to minimizing our energy use in all facets of our company. From running our Mills as energy-efficiently as possible to encouraging employees to live more sustainable work and personal lives, we’re focused on reducing energy use.

  • We have two full-time energy managers as part of our team
  • We utilize biogas production and recovery
  • We are partners in a cogeneration facility in Whitby, helping to produce electricity for Ontario
  • Our paper mills use high-efficiency motors, minimizing the amount of energy used
  • Over the past few years, we have updated all of the lightings in our facilities to high-efficiency lighting, reducing our lighting energy consumption by nearly 50%
  • We installed solar panels on the rooftops of three of our facilities, helping to further generate power

Reducing Green House Gas Emissions (GHG)

Choosing to use 100% recycled corrugated packaging products releases fewer emissions than virgin fiber products. The total Green House Gas emissions eliminated through Atlantic’s use and production of recycled packaging is approximately 324,900 tons per year, which equates to keeping 108,300 cars off the road.

Energy efficiency plays a big role in reducing Atlantic’s GHG emissions, but we don’t stop there. Transportation is a large part of our business, and to reduce the number of emissions associated with transportation, we’ve aimed to make sure that over 90% of our paper fiber comes from domestic sources, minimizing the distance our trucks travel. For the 5 years starting 2010, we have tracked our GHG intensity reduction to be 11%.

Recycling

Recycling plays an important role in Atlantic’s sustainability initiatives. As a manufacturer of 100% recycled paper, we process the equivalent of 50% of what is collected in Ontario’s blue box program. The fiber we process keeps more than 22,800 trucks worth of material out of landfills.

First-Ever Canadian Green Loan

Atlantic Packaging and BMO have come together to build a more sustainable future. Atlantic Packaging is Canada’s first-ever recipient of a labelled Green Loan. BMO acted as Co-Lead, Joint Bookrunner, and Co-Green Structuring Agent on the Green Loan. This innovative product will see loan proceeds used to support projects with environmental benefits. Through this partnership, Atlantic and BMO aim to redefine sustainability.
